130 km north of Amman is the site of Hellenistic-Roman ruined city of Pella. This city has undergone small excavations and a village is what remains of the city. Pella is home to one of Christianity’s earliest churches. Current excavations are focusing more on the temples and churches that have been found on the site. There is evidence that Pella was once a large formidable city in its time. Near the site is a mosque which commemorates the death of one of the Prophet Mohammed’s companions. A massive earthquake called the Golan earthquake in 749 crippled the city, leaving the city in ruins.
