Madaba
Madaba is 50 km west of Amman and is home to many ancient mosaics and churches. The most notable places to visit are St. George’s Church, Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan the baptism site of Jesus of Nazareth by John the Baptist, and Mount Nebo the mountain where Moses could only see the Promised Land. Madaba is a land that is rich in biblical and historical accounts with many places of interest in the area. Elijah’s Hill is not far from the baptism site, said to be the hill that Elijah ascended into the heavens from a cloud. Nearby are the site where John the Baptist lived and the fort where he was beheaded. For most travelers, this is a religious destination, for others this is a location rich with historical significance and culture.
