Welcome to the ancient trade route that connected Egypt to the Euphrates River and Damascus. This ancient thoroughfare has been known as the frankincense road, the royal road, the Via Nova Traiana (under Emperor Trajan), the Sultan's road and the road to Mecca. Winding along a line of freshwater springs on a ridge of mountains through the Jordan Rift Valley, the King's Highway links the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea and the Red Sea.
This was the major traffic route that was vital to all trade in the Middle East. The Nabataeans used this route to trade luxury goods like frankincense and spices from Saudi Arabia. This ancient road passes through most of the places of interest in Jordan. The King’s Highway is believed to be the route that was taken when the Israelites wandered in the desert before they reached the Holy Land. It was also the major Hajj route on the way to Mecca and a Christian pilgrimage route.
