Home of one of three of the largest castles in the Region, Kerak is 140 km south of Amman on the King’s Highway. Kerak was once part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem as a Crusader stronghold. The castle was built on a hilltop surrounded by valleys on three sides, giving invaders only one mean of entry. Kerak has been inhabited by the Moabite, Nabataean, Roman, Hellenistic, Byzantine, Egyptian, Crusader, and Ottoman civilizations. When the region was taken over by the Crusaders, they built Kerak Castle in 1142 under Pagan the Butler. Kerak fell to the Ayyubids in the Siege of Kerak and the Battle of Hittin. Today the town of Kerak is built around the castle, but it is evident that the castle dominates the area.
