Welcome to the lush beautiful city of Ajloun. Ajloun is a city located north west of Amman and is home to Ajloun Castle, located on the site of an old monastery. The castle was built in 1184 by Izz al-Din Usama as a fortress against the Frankish Crusaders in the north and to control traffic on the road that connected Damascus to Egypt. It was captured by Mongols in 1260 and was partially destroyed in that effort. In the center of the town is one of the oldest mosques in Jordan, dating back 800 years. Near Ajloun is Tell Mar Elias, believed to be the hill where Elijah was taken into heaven. Nearby are locations that contain mosaics from the Byzantine era. These sites represent some Arab architecture and methods of construction compared to those of the Crusaders.
