Amman is the capital city of Jordan. It is an urban metropolis with hotels, restaurants, cafes, shopping malls, residential high-rise buildings, and financial business skyscrapers. The Queen Aliah International Airport is just outside the city limits. Amman is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its name stems from the many waters that once ran through the city’s seven hills at one point in history. The Citadel is what remains of the Roman city that sits atop the hill of Amman, within the Roman ruins is the Temple of Hercules. Below the Citadel is the largest Roman Theater in the region. Among other sites to see in Amman are the King Abdullah I Mosque, Abu Darweesh Mosque, and the Hellenistic ruin of Qasr al Abd in the valley of Wadi Al Seer. There are many museums, historical sites, and places of interest to visit in Amman. It is simply fascinating to see these ancient ruins in the middle of a modern and active city. The mixture of oriental marketplaces and urban cafés will bring you back and forth through time.
